That power output figure stands front and center. I remember when a 1,000-lumen flashlight was a big deal, and here’s one with 8,000 lumens. It’s not a numbers trick, either – the EDC37 backs that up with 44,010 candela.

Think of it this way: lumens indicate how bright the light is, and candela indicate how far it will reach. Some lights are powerful short-range tools that can’t go the distance. This one is the whole enchilada.

You can choose to dial up all that power or keep things tame with six power levels: 15, 100, 400, 1,500, 3,000, and 8,000 lumens. There’s also an 8,000-lumen strobe. The battery fully charges with a USB-C cord in two hours.

You can cycle through these before turning the light on, thanks to a display on the side. It also shows battery life and estimated remaining run time.

External controls include one tailswitch for power and brightness levels, one customizable tailswitch, and a sliding lockout to prevent you from accidentally turning the light on.

The EDC37 is small enough to fit in a pocket, but it would also make a great addition to your off-body carry setup.

Nitecore lists an MSRP of $139.95 for the EDC37.

Is this overkill, a viable self-defense tool, the ultimate EDC flashlight, or maybe a little of all three?
