It wasn’t that long ago that I thought Springfield Armory might let the XD line of pistols ride off into the sunset while the innovative Echelon carried on the brand’s torch.

I was wrong because there’s a brand-new evolution of that series’ lineage on the scene, and I suspect it’s going to sell fast.

The Springfield Armory XD MOD.3 breathes new life into the XD name with updated features, better ergonomics, and – I can’t believe I’m writing this – an MSRP of $325.

Just imagine what retail prices are going to be!

Springfield Armory XD MOD.3 Specs & Features

Specs

  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Action: Striker-fire
  • Capacity: 16+1
  • Barrel Length: 4”
  • Overall Length: 7.3”
  • Weight: 27 oz
  • Optic Ready: Yes
  • MSRP: $325

Features

  • RMR, DeltaPoint Pro, and Noblex adapter plates
  • Steel sights (fiber optic front, white dot rear)
  • Updated grip texture

At its core, this new pistol is a polymer-frame, striker-fired 9mm pistol that’s versatile enough to handle CCW and home defense jobs reasonably well. In terms of size, think of it as a Glock 19.

Updates include a flat-faced trigger and a loaded chamber indicator that’s tactile as well as visual.

Ergonomically, you’ll get updated grip texture on the frame and slide serrations that look a lot like what’s on the higher-end Echelon.

The XD MOD.3’s fiber optic front and white dot rear sights are a welcome improvement over the XD MOD.2’s more basic sights.

It uses the same 16-round magazines as the old XD9, which means they’re affordable and easy to come by.

As with existing XD pistols, this one is optic-ready and uses Springfield Amrory’s OSP adapter plate system. It supports red dots with the RMR, DeltaPoint Pro, and Noblex mounting footprints.

The XD MOD.3 offers a nice contrast to the Echelon.

Don’t get me wrong; several of us here at Pew Pew Tactical have experience with the Echelon, and it got solid marks in our hands-on Echelon review, but it’s more pistol than entry-level or casual shooters need.

Hacking the MSRP in half with a cleaver is a pretty good way to welcome those people into the fold.
