Taurus is entering the long-gun market with a bolt-action hunting rifle chambered for a classic American hunting round – the .308 Win.

The Taurus Expedition combines proven design elements with modern touches to create a portable hunting rifle that promises enough accuracy to reach out and touch game animals and targets alike.

Taurus built the Expedition around the Remington 700 action. That opens up a world of aftermarket possibilities and leans on one of the most successful designs in shooting history. At launch, the Expedition is only available in .308 Win, but Taurus promises more cartridge options are coming.

Specs

  • Action: Bolt-Action
  • Caliber: .308 Win
  • Overall Length: 38”
  • Barrel Length: 18"
  • Capacity: 5+1
  • MSRP: $984

Features

  • Based on the Remington 700 action
  • Uses AICS magazines
  • M-LOK compatible stock

The action might be a blast from the past, but everything else is modern. Upgrades over the original 700 include a fluted bolt, a 60-degree bolt throw, and an adjustable trigger.

The chunky synthetic stock makes the Expedition look more like a rifle built for stacking tight groups at the range than a slender, sporting rifle. There’s an M-LOK mounting point on the flat-bottomed fore-end where you can add a bipod, and the sides are flattened so you can get a tight fit in a tripod-mounted gun saddle.

The hammer-forged stainless-steel barrel gets DLC protection and a threaded muzzle for adding a suppressor or brake. Ammunition comes from a detachable AICS magazine rather than an internal box.

Taurus claims sub-MOA accuracy out of the box, which has become the standard for centerfire bolt guns.

Revolvers have traditionally been the bread and butter of Taurus. Models like the Judge and Raging Bull have achieved widespread name recognition and popularity. Branching out into the semiautomatic pistol game with models like the G3 must have been a lucrative decision that gave Taurus product planners the confidence to build a rifle.

Starting with a proven action was a smart move, and I wouldn't be surprised to see more big reveals from Taurus over the next few years.

Taurus lists an MSRP of $984 for the Expedition, with retail prices expected to be closer to $750.
