Action shooting sports have made major strides in the last few years, and one of the most popular is 3-Gun. A sport that, to no one’s surprise, has shooters using three guns per match — handguns, shotguns, and rifles.

Today, we’ll look at the favorite of most shooters…the rifle.

    Daniel Defense DDM4V7 Desert Shooting
    Behold…the rifle!

Rifles are easier to shoot than handguns and less challenging to load, so they tend to be a make-or-break portion of a 3-Gun match.

Though there’s no rule saying you have to use an AR-style rifle, AR-15s dominate the 3-Gun rifle market. There’s a mix of builds, buys, and purpose-built guns, but today, we’re going to tackle the purpose-built variety.

So keep reading as we walk you through how to choose an AR-15 for 3-Gun and which models we recommend.

How to Choose an AR-15 for 3-Gun Competition

Rifles for 3-Gun don’t have to be any different than any other AR. However, there are clear trends in what 3-Gunners look for in a rifle.

In short, you want to look for these things (we’ll go more in-depth into these in a minute):

    • Accuracy
    • Reliability
    • Low recoil
    • Good ergonomics
    • Lightweight
    Lead Star Grunt AR-15 (11)

You want accuracy and reliability from any rifle, but especially in competition rifles. Since 3-Gun is an action shooting sport, we aren’t necessarily looking for a PRS gun, so we might make some sacrifices to obtain something like weight savings. If you’re running, gunning, and transitioning between targets, a Colt HBAR isn’t what you need.

Low recoil is also extremely helpful, so things like brakes and compensators are common.

    BCM-Gunfighter-Compensator
A comp is a pretty popular accessory

3-Gun ARs tend to lean heavily into ergonomics to help with faster reloads and to make it easier to shoot from both shoulders. It’s not uncommon to see rifles with ambidextrous ergonomics and larger controls.

At the end of the day, most 3-Gun shooters want a rifle that’s lightweight, accurate, reliable, and low recoiling, with excellent ergonomics.

Daniel Defense is well known for their duty rifles, but the DDM4 V7 series has found themselves on the competition field more than a time or two. The DDM4 V7 Pro in particular makes for one heckuva 3-Gun rifle.

Aimpoint Comp M5 on Daniel Defense DDM4 V7
    Daniel Defense DDM4 V7

My favorite feature is the 18-inch barrel and rifle-length gas system. Rifle-length gas systems run incredibly smoothly with minimal recoil and concussion. It’s just plain comfy, and the natural mitigation of recoil and muzzle rise makes it easy to stay on target.

The end of that barrel is touched with the Daniel Defense muzzle climb mitigator. It’s an odd-looking muzzle device but does as advertised, keeping the gun low and on target between trigger pulls.

    Daniel Defense DDM4V7 Grip Angle

Its MFR rail is lightweight, and the light barrel profile keeps the gun from being front-heavy. Daniel Defense went with the Super Dynamic 3-Gun trigger for a short, light pull, with a good reset to nail those quick doubles when time matters. (Time always matters.)

As expected, we get the DD cold hammer forged barrels. Finally, DD tops the DDM4 V7 off with a Radian Charging handle and Radian safety selector.

Like all DD rifles, it has Daniel Defense furniture and is built to an extremely high-quality level.

    • Features: Timney Trigger, Low Profile Handguard, DH3 Rifle Stock

Daniel Horner, former U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit member, Sig shooter, and 10-time 3-Gun champion, worked with Sig to turn the M400 into a 3-Gunner’s dream. The DH3 model of the M400 is what SIG and Mr. Horner came up with.

The DH3 is chock full of features. First, it has fully ambidextrous controls to accommodate right and left handers. The gun comes with a fluted stainless barrel with a .223 Wylde chamber, a 16-inch barrel topped with a massive 3-chamber compensator, and a low-profile handguard.

Inside the gun, we have a Horner signature Timney trigger with a two-stage adjustable design. The stock is another Horner signature piece – a DH3 adjustable stock offers a consistent cheek weld and an impressively customizable length of pull adjustment. If you thought six positions were enough, you’ll love the DH3.

The M400-DH3 is one of the most ergonomic options out there. Recoil and muzzle rise are minimal, and the weapon handles like a sports car. It turns out that a 10-time 3-Gun champion can design an extremely nice rifle that’s one of the best options for 3-Gun.

    • Features: Hiperfire Trigger, 15-inch M-LOK Handguard, Ravage Muzzle Brake

A quick look at the MSRP of most of the guns on this list shows us a rather high price point. If you want something for less than a thousand bucks, your options are limited. One out-of-the-box option for under a thousand bucks comes from Palmetto State Armory’s Lead Star Arms.

Grunt AR-15 with Romeo5 Red Dot
    Grunt AR-15 with Romeo5

The Grunt isn’t advertised as a dedicated 3-Gun rifle out of the box, but it’s an excellent option for competition, especially at the price point. It’s not as fancy as our other options, but the Grunt is remarkably lightweight at 5.6 pounds. You won’t get tired of trying to rock and roll through a long match.

The little things, like the Hipefire Duty trigger and Ravage Muzzle brake, allow the grunt to keep up with some of the big dogs on the block. Its trigger is smooth, consistent, and overall excellent. The brake takes a lot of recoil out of the gun, which makes follow-up shots faster.

    Lead Star Grunt AR-15 (6)

What’s the downside? The extreme amount of noise that big brake creates. That said, the system is well-tuned and very soft, shooting for a somewhat barebones rifle platform.

The Grunt performs at a high level and is remarkably reliable for an affordable, semi-custom rifle.

    • MSRP: $2200 (varies)
    • Features: Supermatch Barrel, Silent Captured Spring, Competition Series Compensator

JP is no stranger to the high-end competition market with the distinct advantage of employing competition rifle guys to design their competition rifles. Each is built from a competition perspective to deliver a high-quality competition rifle.

The JP-15 arms shooters for 3-Gun or any action shooting sport involving semi-auto rifles. This series comes in several different calibers, including 5.56, .300 Blackout, 6.5 Grendel, and even the humble .22 LR.

    JP15
    (Photo: JP Enterprises)

It offers shooters a sub-MOA rifle that’s extremely reliable, lightweight, and perfect for your next 3-Gun match.

The massive muzzle device at the end of the stainless-steel barrel delivers excellent all-around recoil and muzzle rise mitigation. It feels like a laser in your hands. Everything about this rifle is built to help you slide across the finish line quickly and accurately.

It’s tough to give you a full list of features, furniture, and more because almost every JP-15 is a little different, thanks to the custom way in which JP Rifles takes orders. You get to build your own gun from the ground up and make it what you want.

The Stag Arms 3-Gun comes with a Ballistic Advantage Hanson Profile Barrel. These are purpose-built for accuracy and efficiency. According to Ballistic Advantage, the design even limits recoil and improves balance. At the end of the barrel sits a Gamma SL Muzzle brake to drastically reduce recoil and improve control.

Stag Arms went with a Hiperfire Hipertouch Competition Trigger that provides a light pull, a quick reset, and the ability to customize the trigger pad for the perfect pull.

This gun comes with ambidextrous safety and one of my favorite AR charging handles, the Breach. It’s huge, ambidextrous, and well-suited for rapid manipulations. The rifle also sports Magpul furniture and even a Magpul 40-round magazine, which is a favorite for 3-Gunners who dread the reload.

The Stag Arms 3-Gun rifle is an out-of-the-box option for a lightweight gamer gun with high accuracy, reliability, and low recoil.

Most shooters likely associate LWRC with high-end duty rifles that are in the hands of special operations troops, cops, and more. The LWRC IC DI Competition takes a heel turn and creates a stalwart competition rifle that retains the duty-ready reliability, accuracy, and capability of LWRC’s rifles.

    LWRCI DI
LWRCI DI is already a solid rifle, but add some extra features, and it kicks competition up a notch

The LWRC IC DI Competition series comes standard with fully ambidextrous controls and numerous improvements over a standard AR.

Things like the short throw safety make it quick and easy to get into action, as does a large ambi charging handle. The rifle comes with the always outstanding Timney 6675 Competition trigger. This flat-faced trigger offers a light and crisp trigger pull that has a short reset for fast and accurate shots.

    LWRC ID DI Comp

The LWRC IC DI Competition rifle also has the LWRC Ultra-Brake that reduces recoil and muzzle rise, so the rifle can keep up with those fast trigger pulls. Up front, we have a 14-inch M-LOK free float rail that’s ultra-light and low profile.

The oddest thing about the LWRC Comp rifle is the user a the Magpul fixed stock. It’s a fine stock, but it might not fit everyone. Luckily, stocks are easy to replace!

While these rifles are focused on 3-Gun, they could arguably be used for most action shooting sports involving a rifle. They are lightweight, accurate, easy to shoot, ergonomic, and fantastic overall.

Not a bad article, but I do have a couple of comments:
      - A little surprised not to see any lesser-known rifles on that list, especially ones that former Tier I operators lend the use of their name to: {specialopstactical dot com/product/bob-keller-signature-rifle-14-8-16-04-tiger-w-firestorm-14-mlok/}
      - A reload on tube-style shotgun mag (e.g. Benelli, Remington, Mossberg, etc.) will slow you down a LOT if a stage calls for more than ~9-10 shotgun rounds. I actually ditched my Rem 1100, registered for the 2-gun division instead and had a blast.

I actually own the Stag 3G and its actually the best value riflle on this list. It already has the geissele 3G trigger installed and an upgraded ER Shaw barrel amd life warranty. Stag actually makes parts for some these other companies. And if you look online this rifle can be had for less than $1200. Just pick up topic and its ready to go and i love mine.

Colt used to have a competition model in the 1900-2100 range that was not on this list.

Coworker has the daniel defense and it may be the nicest AR ive ever seen.

The Taran Tactical is also only a 16in barrel unlike most of these rifles with 18in barrels. But it looked awesome in John Wick 2.
