Poke fun at people who carry a revolver for self defense at your own peril. Revolvers have a long history of success, and modern innovations are keeping them relevant.

Case in point: the Taurus 66 Combat. Taurus loaded this medium-frame revolver with features specially designed for concealed carry.

At the heart of the 66 Combat is the tried and true .357 Mag cartridge. It’s an icon in the self-defense world; fit for two- and four-legged foes alike. That means you can also step down to cheaper and softer-recoiling .38 Spl ammo for training or .38 Spl +P loads to strike a happy medium.

And this isn’t a six-gun. It has a seven-shot cylinder that’s a welcome upgrade, considering that capacity is the Achilles heel of CCW revolvers.

A high-visibility fiber optic front sight sits on top of the 3-inch barrel. I’ll take that over stubby iron sights any day.

But that’s not your only sighting option. Taurus drilled and tapped the frame to accept optic adapter plates for adding a red dot.

According to Taurus, the factory plate gives you the option to mount any optic with the Shield RMSc footprint. I’ve already seen aftermarket options from C&H in the wild, so the 66 appears to use the same thread pattern as the Taurus Judge.

Last but not least, Taurus refined the double-action trigger for a smoother pull. The spurless hammer keeps the back of the revolver streamlined for snag-free draws from concealment.

Rounding everything out is a Hogue rubber grip that should keep recoil manageable.

Taurus lists an MSRP of $972.99 for the 66 Combat.
