SMITH & WESSON M&P9 Shield Plus 9mm
  • 13+1 capacity
  • Good grip texture
  • Reliable
  • Challenging for large hands
  • A little snappy
  • Slightly difficult field strip
Editor’s Note

“The Shield 9 Plus is about as small as you can go and still have an easily useable platform with ergonomic controls across a range of hand sizes…any smaller and compromises begin to occur. That said, Smith did an excellent job with this pistol, making it accurate, easy to use, and wholly concealable.” – Sean Curtis

By The Numbers - Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus

Accuracy
Standing at 7 yards, I fired 3-round groups at a target. Most of my groups were in the 1.5- to 2-inch range and I found this to be pretty good for the size of the gun.
Reliability
This gun ate up everything I fed it, I ran 115-grain Remington UMC and 147-grain hollow points with a grand total of over 500 rounds. There were zero failures.
Customization
Other than sights and holsters, there are limited options to accessorize this gun.
Ergonomics
The 9 Shield Plus did a really good job of accommodating my large hands. I was able to reach all controls without adjusting my grip.

Sig Sauer P365

$447.99

The Sig P365 is an impressive micro 9mm with a great track record. This gun is a popular subcompact semi-auto pistol, designed for CCW and self defense. Some of it’s key features include a 10-round capacity, which is higher than many of its competitors, compact and modular, has XRAY3 Day/Night sights providing visibility in low light conditions, and ambi controls. We’ve tested this gun time and time again. As our writer puts it, “The rest of the industry has had a couple of years to catch up but the P365 is still an impressive micro 9mm that is super popular as a CCW option.” – Travis Pike

Sig Sauer P365 SAS

$675.99

The SIG Sauer P365 SAS is a variant of the popular P365 concealed carry pistol, with the SAS standing for “Sig Anti-Snag”. The pistol features a number of design elements that make it highly concealable and easy to carry, including a flush-mounted FT Bullseye fiber optic sight, a snag-free slide, and a recessed takedown lever. The tool-less disassembly and useful slide lock also make the SAS a good choice for EDC. The pistol has a 10+1 capacity and is chambered in 9mm. Overall, the SIG Sauer P365 SAS is a high capacity, highly concealable and reliable option for those looking for a compact pistol for CCW.

final verdict

“I was impressed with the 9 Shield Plus and can’t imagine the task of keeping a gun small (but useable for a wide range of different-sized people) while increasing capacity was an easy thing. Smith & Wesson pulled it off. All in, the 9 Shield Plus is an absolutely solid performer and a great value for the price.” – Sean Curtis

I got it with the Performance center improvements like trigger job and ported barrel makes it the best the best shooter ever! I own four Smith & Wesson M&P pistols and this is the one I will be CCW here on out!

I knew this was the ccw for me the moment I picked it up, it just fit in my hands like it had been made for me. I have shot other larger Smith pistols, Glocks, Sig and Tarus and the shield shoots as well or better for me. If you have a hard time with the angle of a Glock, this may be a good fit. I was able to learn where and when the reset of the flat face trigger happens after a couple clips. I do not have any issues with the stock trigger. Yes, it is a little snappy compared to a full size M&P frame, but I can still put 3 rounds on target in quick succession. I have plain old white dot sights and manage to do ok with them. I do intend to upgrade to fiber optic in the near future but haven’t decided on which brand yet. I use a kydex iwb holster at right appendix and it carries nicely with out being heavy or sweaty. This little pistol and holster disappears even with gym shorts. I usually carry the 10 round clip just because it’s about an inch shorter but I do prefer the extra meat of the 13 round clip when at the range. I will usually shoot a clip full of one and change to the other just to be familiar with both. I’ve had this gun for just over a year and in that time I have put about 20 boxes of ammo thru it and never had one single hitch. I do clean after each session and as far as takedown, if you can read instructions it’s about as simple as it gets. Components of this gun are logical and fit together nice and tight. I like the size and build of this pistol so much I bought the M&P22 as a trainer. More on that in a new review.
