New Product Highlight: Bushmaster BA50

Every time Bushmaster announces a new product, people come out of the woodwork to complain that it’s not the return of the ACR. I get that the ACR was a cool concept but I don’t think we’ll hear much whining this time.

The latest reveal out of Carson City, Nevada, is the Bushmaster BA50, a bolt-action chassis rifle that slings .50 BMG practically as far as the eye can see.

Firing the massively powerful .50 BMG cartridge is no easy task, but the BA50 can handle it. The rifle’s 29-inch free-floating barrel features a 1:15 twist for those 600-plus-grain bullets, a three-port brake to tame recoil (relatively speaking, that is), and a protective Cerakote finish.

Your eyes aren’t deceiving you – there’s no bolt in the conventional location. This one’s on the left side, presumably so you can exert some leverage on the AR-style pistol grip when you’re unlocking that heavy-duty action.

Rounds come from a steel 10-round magazine because if one hit of .50 BMG is good, 10 must be better.

The system includes a Magpul PRS Gen 3 adjustable stock, a 14-inch billet handguard, and a standard Picatinny rail for your optic of choice.

Speaking of optics, all you have to do is mount a scope, and you’re in business. The BA50 ships with a GG&G LCB-3 bipod that’s built specifically for high-powered rifles like this one. It doesn’t pan or swivel; it just takes .50 BMG recoil like a champ.

You’ll also get a fitted hard case.

The BA50 is available in black or flat dark earth with no difference in price.

Bushmaster lists an MSRP of $6878.95 for the BA50.

That’s a sizeable amount of money, but Bushmaster’s marketing team isn’t wrong when they say this is an “affordable” firearm. It’s not uncommon to see rifles chambered for .50 BMG sell for $10,000, $15,000, or more.

And besides, what’s a few grand to a shooter who’s about to send $4 down the barrel with every pull of the trigger?
