Firearms and cartridges are symbiotic; a new firearm cannot survive if there isn’t ammo to feed it, and nobody will buy ammo if they can’t find a gun that shoots it.
The unconventional 5.7×28 pistol cartridge is kind of in limbo. It’s been around for a while, but there aren’t many firearm or ammunition manufacturers lining up to get in on the action, and that has a natural cooling effect on consumer demand.
Fans of 5.7×28 have reason to be optimistic, though, because Fiocchi is leaning into this quirky little pistol round with two new combination packs that make it more convenient to train with and carry a 5.7×28 pistol or PCC.
Fiocchi ships each combo pack with 300 rounds of training ammunition. These target-focused bullets use full metal jacket construction, weigh 40 grains, and leave the muzzle at a claimed 1,700 feet per second.
The Target & Defense combo pack adds 100 rounds of 40-grain hollow point ammo that pushes speeds to 1,750 feet per second. If you’re going to rely on a 5.7×28 pistol for self-defense, this is the combo pack for you.
The Target & Training combo pack swaps defensive ammunition out for 100 rounds of relatively beefy 62-grain ammo moving at a subsonic 1,050 feet per second. This pack is for people who run a suppressor and want to keep the round’s sound signature to a minimum. It’s effective but sacrifices the speed that makes this round potent in the first place (hence the training designation).
So, what’s the deal with 5.7×28? Basically, the argument is that power can be achieved through speed rather than mass. It’s the opposite of the big but slow .45 ACP.
This round uses very small bullets (as little as 40 grains, like .22 LR, in this case) but sends them out of the barrel at around 1,700 feet per second. That promises great penetration compared to many other pistol cartridges.
Whether or not that makes it a good defensive round depends on your priorities and needs. It’s worth a look, though.
