In 2022, Garmin launched its inReach Messenger satellite communicator. In addition to sending and receiving messages like the inReach Mini, it lets users send messages from their cell phones when cellular service isn’t available.
Now, there’s an updated version: the Garmin inReach Messenger Plus.
This one offers a huge leap in capabilities to keep you more connected than ever – anywhere in the world. And, as always, it’s a backcountry workhorse that can handle whatever adventures you throw at it.

As with the original inReach Messenger, the inReach Messenger Plus pairs with your phone using the Garmin Messenger app to keep you in touch – no cellular service required.
This one raises the bar with the ability to send photos and 30-second voice messages from your phone.
Messaging directly from the device is easier, too. Instead of being limited to 160 characters per message, Garmin gives you 1,600 characters with the inReach Messenger Plus.
You can also use the inReach Messenger Plus on its own or with your phone using the Garmin Explore app to navigate (it is a Garmin, after all). Track your progress, check the distance and direction to your next waypoint, and share your route with others.
If all else fails, you can send an SOS message through the app or directly from the inReach Messenger device. Garmin Response, which is staffed around the clock, will help coordinate a rescue – now with the benefit of photos and voice messages to understand exactly what kind of help you need.
All this tech comes in a rugged housing that’s impact-resistant, IPX7 waterproof, and capable of withstanding temperatures from 14 to 149 degrees Fahrenheit.
The rechargeable battery can last 600 hours while transmitting your location or a test message every 10 minutes in low-power messaging mode. If you really conserve energy, it can last up to a year.
You can also draw power from the inReach Messenger Plus to charge your phone or other devices off-grid.
“The new and enhanced messaging capabilities of the inReach Messenger Plus gives users a more personal and emotional way to communicate with friends and family when cell service isn’t available,” Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of global consumer sales, said. “Tell your family you’ll be home late, send a photo of the epic view to your friends, or simply exchange voice messages to hear the person on the other end of the line.”
Garmin lists an MSRP of $499.99 for the inReach Messenger Plus. You’ll need a service plan to use it, and Garmin offers several subscriptions ranging from emergency-only to nearly unlimited.
All inReach plans give you access to the Iridium satellite network for uninterrupted coverage anywhere in the world.
