Grayl is not a shooting company; it’s a group of obsessive water filtration connoisseurs. But that doesn’t mean they don’t serve up some tasty tactical gear every once in a while!
Based on the first look, Grayl’s brand new Mission EXP hip packs look perfect for long days on the range, training in the field, staying hydrated during a match, or hunting in the backcountry.

Grayl describes its new line of Mission EXP hip packs as “tactical inspired, MOLLE ridden, overbuilt packs that tackle the harshest conditions.” Consider my interest piqued.
There are three sizes to choose from: 2.0-liter, 2.5-liter, and 4.5-liter. Each comes in black, coyote brown, olive drab, and wander blue.
All three feature zippered compartments galore, MOLLE attachment points, and grippy straps for a water bottle underneath.
Since hydration is the focus of these packs, they also have a pair of expandable water bottle pouches straddling the main compartment. If you don’t need that much water, they look like they’d double as super handy dump pouches for the gear you want readily available (looking at you, bear spray).
This is a modular system, so you can stick on Grayl G-MOD pouches for even more storage.
One thing Mission EXP hip packs lack is a CCW compartment since that’s not their intended purpose. If you plan on hiking with a handgun or carrying a sidearm while you hunt, I recommend using a chest holster.
There are lots of times when I want to keep water, some snacks, a rangefinder, my phone, and some first aid essentials handy, but I don’t feel like lugging a backpack around all day. This hip pack is a great solution to that problem.
If it leads to the addition of a world-class filtration system that saves me from picking up Giardia miles from the nearest trailhead, that’s all the better. Life-threatening intestinal distress is terrible for accuracy.
Grayl lists a starting MSRP of $99.95 for the Mission EXP hip packs.
