New Product Highlight: Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical – Thunder Ranch

Mossberg’s shotgun lineup is one of the most comprehensive in the business. For 2024, Mossberg is updating its line of autoloading tactical shotguns with the 940 Pro Tactical – Thunder Ranch.

Designers partnered with legendary instructor Clint Smith to create a defensive shotgun that checks a lot of boxes.

What’s unique to the Thunder Ranch edition is a cylinder bore instead of Mossberg’s Accu-Choke system, ambidextrous QD mounting points for a sling on the buttstock and forend, and a brown Cerakote finish.

It’s not drastically different from the rest of the 940 Pro Tactical lineup, but neither is the price.

Like the Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical we reviewed, this one is chambered for 3-inch 12-gauge shells and uses a gas system, rather than a pump action or inertia system, to cycle. The stock’s length of pull is adjustable, and the barrel clamp has an M-LOK slot on each side for accessories like a weapon light.

The 940 Pro Tactical series comes with an optic-ready receiver where you can mount a micro red dot using the Shield RMSc footprint.

Mossberg improved performance with modifications to the loading port, elevator, charging handle, and bolt release.

The shotgun’s gas piston, magazine tube, hammer, and sear are nickel-boron coated to reduce carbon buildup. As a result of the cleaner-running gas system, Mossberg recommends a maintenance interval of 1,500 rounds.

“Say whatever you want about shotguns being archaic,” Clint Smith said in a release from Mossberg.

“They have proven themselves over and over to be very capable in defense of the individual, military member, and law enforcement officer for many years previous and for many more years to come.”

Mossberg lists an MSRP of $1,295 for the 940 Pro Tactical – Thunder Ranch.
