We might be in the middle of summer now, but if you’re not planning for opening day, you’re already falling behind. Fortunately, there are ways to make the most of every remaining hour between now and the first morning of deer season (and don’t sleep on fall turkey hunting).
The latest hunter-focused tech to hit the scene comes in the form of the Moultrie Edge 2 and Edge 2 Pro trail cameras.

The new Moultrie Edge 2 brings a few upgrades to a model that’s already one of our favorite trail cameras.
Trigger speed is down from 0.65 seconds to 0.4 seconds. Resolution is up from 33 Megapixels to 36 MP. Detection and illumination range is also up – it’s now 100 feet instead of 80 feet and the field of view increased from 40 to 50 degrees.
Better yet, you can access your trail cameras through the app to snap photos and record HD videos with sound on demand.
From the app, you can set the detection delay time, schedule times for the camera to power up or shut down and program regular test photos so you can verify that everything’s working the way you want it to.
Moultrie cellular cameras are backed by four major networks (with a subscription) and automatically select the strongest signal. Files go straight to the cloud – which you can access from your phone – so there’s no need to change out memory cards.
App features include unlimited storage, maps, species recognition, and weather forecasts.
Moultrie lists an MSRP of $99.99 for the Edge 2 and $139.99 for the Edge 2 Pro.

Trail cameras are one of the best assets you can buy when it comes to preparing for opening day. In the big picture, we all get precious little time to sit in the woods – let alone to scout and lay plans for opening day.
If a few hundred bucks can give you eyes on the woods year-round, that sounds like a wise investment to me. It’s even better if you don’t have to tromp around swapping out memory cards and increasing pressure on game animals every time you’re out there.
