I like to break the 1911 market into three categories.
You’ve got the bargain-basement variety like the sub-$400 Tisas 1911 we reviewed (don’t knock the cheap ones — they’re the closest you’ll get to the service pistols that won two world wars).
Mid-grade pistols like the Kimber Warrior we tested cost anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000. Then there’s the custom stuff; the type of 1911 you want to store in a glass display case on a leather-topped desk.
The SK Guns Luchando Tigre is such a 1911. It’s the latest limited-edition pistol from the craftsmen at SK Customs, and it’ll set you back $2,700 – if you preorder one before it sells out.

The Luchando Tigre is the latest installment in SK Customs’ Untamed series of pistols paying homage to some of nature’s most dangerous beasts. The first two are the Alacran (scorpion) 1911, and the Anaconda Colt Python revolver.
SK Customs is only producing 200 tiger-themed pistols using a Colt 1911 as a foundation. Like the custom shop’s other commemorative 1911s, this one is chambered for .38 Super rather than .45 ACP, and it’s decked out in gold inlay and ornate engraving.
The slide and frame are made from semi-polished stainless steel. The exquisitely crafted tiger that wraps the slide is made from 24-karat gold. Its eyes, teeth, and claws are plated in silver. Topping it off are rare tiger-striped maple grips.
The Luchando Tigre is a beautiful piece of artistry. Considering what you’d pay for other high-end 1911s, the asking price is actually pretty reasonable – at least that’s what I’m telling myself.
SK Guns lists an MSRP of $2,700 for the Luchando Tigre.
