A year ago, the firearm industry was buzzing with news of the Smith & Wesson Model 1854. We loved it, too, but we wanted more!
Now, Smith & Wesson is answering with the Model 1854 Stealth Hunter, which adds more of the modern features some of us were looking for the first time around.
The entire lineup of 1854 rifles is getting two new cartridge offerings, as well. In addition to .44 Mag, you can now also pick from .357 Mag and .45 Colt.

The Model 1854 Stealth Hunter keeps popular features like the flat-faced trigger, oversized loop, threaded barrel, and a removable magazine tube that lets you unload the rifle without cycling each round through the chamber.
All the components are blacked out to keep a low profile in the deer woods. The buttstock is polymer, but the handguard is now aluminum with five-slot M-LOK rails at the 3-, 6-, and 9-o’clock positions.

The sights are more modern, too. There’s an XS Sights ghost ring at the rear and a HIVIZ H3 fiber-optic sight at the front. Those will perform much better than the original brass bead in low-light conditions.
The original Model 1854 came with a Picatinny rail for mounting optics, but it provided precious little real estate for anything larger than a red dot. The Stealth Hunter gets a much longer Picatinny rail, so you’ll have more flexibility when mounting a scope.
There’s nothing wrong with .44 Mag, but the new cartridge options will appeal to a wider audience. We love .357 Mag for everything from hunting to home defense, and it’s nice to load .38 Spl when you don’t want all that power (and recoil). Reloaders will appreciate the versatility of .45 Colt, which can be loaded to compete with .44 Mag in the field or dialed back for a more pleasant recreational shooting experience.
The Smith & Wesson Model 1854 was already one of the Best Lever Action Rifles of 2024, and these updates are welcome additions.
Smith & Wesson lists an MSRP of $1,399 for the 1854 Stealth Hunter.
