From where I’m sitting, it looks like personal defense weapons (PDW) are enjoying some time in the spotlight. Even the U.S. military is getting in on the trend.
A PDW is more capable than a handgun but more compact than an AR-15 pistol. It’s a compelling proposition for defending homes and vehicles.
The latest? A feature-packed little number called the Springfield Armory Kuna.

At first blush, the Kuna looks like a well-thought-out design.
At the heart of this PDW is a roller-delayed action and lightweight bolt that should shoot significantly softer than the usual direct-blowback PCCs and AR-9s.
The polymer lower receiver keeps weight down and looks very familiar to anyone who’s shot an AR-15.
The safety, magazine release, and bolt release are ambidextrous. The non-reciprocating charging handle can go on either side of the Kuna and it folds out of the way when not in use.

The upper receiver is aluminum, with M-LOK slots for accessories and a full-length Picatinny rail for optics. The Kuna ships with hybrid sights. Lay them down to use Springfild’s U-Dot sights, or stand them up for more precise peep sights that look tall enough to co-witness with most optics.
The back of the upper receiver provides another section of Picatinny rail where you can mount a brace. Springfield offers the Kuna with an optional Strike Industries FSA brace from the factory.
The 6-inch barrel is threaded in 1/2×28 for those who want to mount a suppressor, and it comes with a ported muzzle device.
The Kuna feeds from proprietary 30-round magazines, and it comes with two of them. They’re made from translucent polymer so you can keep tabs on round count, but feature metal feed lips for reliability.
It looks like the Kuna fits nicely between a concealed carry pistol and an AR-15 pistol. Should we get one to review?
Springfield Armory lists an MSRP of $999 for the Kuna – $1,149 with a brace.

Is this made in America, or is it another Croatian import?
HS Produkt builds the Kuna (as a select-fire submachine gun) in Croatia. I should add that they make a .40 S&W version. Think that's coming next?
Proprietary mags. Ugh
Gary, they are proprietary but they are also set at $25 each. A little more than Magpul Scorpion mags, but still pretty much below everything other double-feed mag.
so what does this do that a stribog spa3 doesn't?
Sounds like an interesting head-to-head comparison to me... I like the way you think.
Yeah, go ahead and see if you can get one for review. Might be interesting.
