We can only get so many new firearms every year, but sometimes manufacturers spoil us with new colors, and that’s some consolation.
Maybe this is my inner Marine speaking, but I will buy pretty much anything in coyote brown. I’m not the only one, and Springfield Armory must have gotten the memo because the company just ripped the curtain off a coyote brown version of the Prodigy 1911 DS.
Aside from the coyote brown Cerakote finish on the slide and frame, the coyote brown polymer grip, and the black barrel, this is the same 9mm 1911 DS Prodigy we’ve come to know.
It still comes with a 4.25- or 5-inch barrel, a fiber optic front sight, a full-length guide rod, a match-grade bull barrel, ambidextrous safety controls, and an optic-cut slide with front and rear serrations.

Like other 2011s and double-stack 1911s, the Prodigy uses adapter plates to interface with various optic footprints. Springfield sells Agency Optic System adapter plates for six different footprints and other company’s plates will fit, as well.
Say what you will about this platform’s practicality and cost-effectiveness compared to modern striker-fire pistols, but I can’t deny that it’s lovely to shoot. The trigger is short and crisp. Recoil is gentle as can be. Handling this pistol feels like operating machinery; most pistols can’t replicate that sensation these days.
When Springfield launched the Prodigy, it played the affordable alternative to the expensive 2011 pistols from Staccato. At SHOT Show 2024, we noticed several other companies rolling out 2011 and double-stack 1911 pistols for even less, making the Prodigy an increasingly appealing option that splits the difference.
Looking cool isn’t free in this case. A coyote brown Prodigy will cost you $50 more than the all-black original. Springfield Armory lists an MSRP of $1,549 for the coyote brown Prodigy.
