Instead of electronic gizmos, these safes use a mechanical five-button Simplex lock that’s faster than a conventional tumbler lock and relies on your memory rather than a physical key.
The safe is constructed from 12-gauge steel that’s powder-coated for protection against the elements, dings, and scratches. Hinges are staked, welded, and protected by punch guards.
Fast Access Pistol Boxes are heavy-duty items (12 pounds for the small and 15 pounds for the large). If you want to anchor your safe to furniture or a car seat for added security, you can buy a nylon-coated galvanized steel security cable rated at 6,000 pounds for $25.
Inside, multiple pieces of foam protect the safe’s contents and let you add or remove layers to achieve the right fit.
The small safe measures 6.5 inches wide, 11 inches long, and three inches deep. That’s enough room for a compact pistol like a Glock 19. The larger version measures 8.5 inches wide, 12.25 inches long, and three inches deep to accommodate full-size pistols like a Glock 17.
“Our pistol lock boxes with thicker steel and premium locks are built for optimal security, even our beefy cable is best-in-class,” Steelhead Outdoors co-founder Corey Meyer said. “We offer three options so consumers can select which meets their needs best.”
Steelhead lists an MSRP of $280 for the small Fast Access Pistol Box and $300 for the large Fast Access Pistol Box.

The price is high relative to other simplex safes on market. If there was a sale I might get one.
I prefer mechanical over electronic - electronics can fail; mechanical will not.
I like it, but still prefer my Console Vault ‘briefcase’ since it’s a little bigger.
